Course Summary: Par: Old 72, New 72
Old Course:
The heart of the San Roque Club is golf; golfers can play the demanding par 72 of The Old Course, the original course designed by Dave Thomas, that winds through cork oak forests with superb mountain views, The old course is regarded as one of the finest in Spain and was in 2005 host to the Open de España on the European Tour. The course has two distinct loops. The first 9 holes set off into cork oaks that are a feature of the course and will eventually return you to the clubhouse. The second 9 are considered to be that little bit more open but you have to contend with some serious water hazards with meandering streams and ponds to negotiate. The course offers a mixture of short and long par 4's, par 5's which for the long hitters are reachable in two and excellent par 3's. San Roque rewards the accurate golfer who can overcome the tight fairways and tiered undulating greens. It is a course that gives pleasure to all standards.
New Course:
The New Course, opened in 2004, was created by legendary American course designer Perry Dye and Severiano Ballesteros. The new course has all the hallmarks to be immediately included in the elite of Europe’s golf facilities. With it’s high quality and impeccable finish and landscaping make the New course far superior to many other courses. For such a young course, it is surprising how quickly it has matured and is presented in magnificent condition. The fairways are superb, the bunkers are immaculate and the greens are first class.
As for the layout, there are ten par 4's, 4 par 5's and three par 3's. The par 3's are particularly impressive, with the shortest hole being
160 metres off the yellow tees. The placement of the tees is also impressive, giving tee shots over difficult terrain to greens surrounded by bunkers that are certainly extreme in places! As long as you are driving the ball well you will enjoy this course but if not, there is plenty of trouble to get into with flower- beds and "love grass" adjoining the fairways. Some of the fairways do appear very narrow from the tees and all in all it is a very good test of golf for even the most accomplished golfer. It is a course where you have to think your way round and you must take notice of the posts that give you the distances at 100, 150 and 200 metres. Sometimes you are given the impression it is not as far as the marker posts suggest but you should trust what is showing.
Both courses provide beautiful and challenging holes for players of all handicaps.
